Internship: Middle East Department at Geneva Call

Internship duration: 3 months minimum

Main activities:
  • Monitor international humanitarian and human rights laws violations  in Syria, Iraq and Yemen
  • Elaborate on  security and risk analyses in the above mention countries prior to  the  field missions of the department
  • Monitor armed non state actors ( to be defined which ones)  behavior related to Geneva Call’s areas of intervention,  in the Middle East
  • Maintained  updated the middle eastern regional and international  events calendar
  • Support the communication department to  update Geneva Call’s  Arabic website and its social network media

Internships at UPR Info

Start: immediate
Internship duration: a minimum period of 3 months, but preferably 6 months
Category: full time, a small stipend is offered.

Domain: UPR process

The intern will be deeply involved in the UPR process and will experience, first-hand, the work and functioning of a small NGO. The internship will include, but will not be limited to, the following tasks: attend and monitor UPR and Human Rights Council sessions, manage the UPR Info website, prepare data and documents for our different programmes and, when relevant, undertake research on the UPR.

Internship at the Association for the prevention of torture

Internship duration (two types):
  • Short term, of a one to three months programme, to assist with a particular project or on UN human rights meetings;
  • Long term, of a three to six months programme, to enable an intern to focus on a particular APT project as well as assist at the monitoring of UN meetings.
Category: full time, a monthly grant of CHF 1’000 to full time interns

Domain: prevention of torture

The APT offers a limited number of internships, normally to young graduates in human rights law, political sciences or international relations. Candidates must have a manifest interest in furthering the work on the prevention of torture, ill-treatment, conditions of detention, or administration of justice. Interns are involved in the daily substantive and organisational work of the APT secretariat. They are normally given their own areas of responsibility and participate in internal meetings as temporary members of staff.

APRIL 2015

Internship at TRIAL (Track Impunity Always)

Start: March - April 2015
Internship duration: 5 to 6 months, preferably full-time
Location: Geneva

TRIAL offers 3 types of internship:
  • Interns for the ‘access to justice for the victims of International crimes’ Programme are mainly involved in assisting in the preparation of individual communications and reports to the different international Human Rights Organs (primarily the European Court of Human Rights, the Human Rights Committee, and UN-Committee against Torture.) The interns can, depending on their competences, summarise judgments, research different legal systems, do judicial research, comment on cases prepared by TRIAL and help in drafting cases.
  • Interns for the “fight against impunity” programme participate mainly in the preparation of criminal complaints in Swiss law (universal jurisdiction).  Interns can, depending on their competence, do research on Swiss law and other legal systems, research human rights and criminal law, and comment on cases prepared by TRIAL.
  • Interns for the TRIAL WATCH programme research, draft, translate, correct and update published profiles in the TRIAL WATCH database. They assist the Project Coordinator in coordinating the volunteers.

Internship at the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)

Start: 15 April
Internship duration: minimum of 3 months (unpaid)
Location: Geneva

The Committee against Torture will be holding its 54th session from 20 April to 15 May 2015. The OMCT is facilitating civil society coordination and is supporting their access to the Committee against Torture in person. It is also expanding the Committee’s reach through participating in the webcasting of the Committee sessions, sharing experiences through live tweets and a blog, and is issuing E-bulletins on the Committee’s sessions. The intern will work under the supervision of the Coordinator of OMCT’s activities in relation to the UN Committee against Torture. His/her activities will include the following
  • To assist in the coordination of Civil Society Organisation’s engagement with the Committee against Torture;
  • To attend and report on the country considerations during the 54th session of the Committee against Torture and other meetings in relation to the session;
  • To manage Twitter/Facebook updates and conduct live webcasts of the Committee against Torture’s session;
  • To draft the E-bulletin; 

  • To carry out research on torture related issues.
